Duncan is a city of approximately 22,000, located in Stephens County in south-central Oklahoma. Originally a small trading post at the intersection of the old Chisholm Trail cattle road and the military passage between Fort Arbuckle and Fort Sill, Duncan has seen and participated in every phase of Oklahomas history. Despite a devastating tornado that nearly destroyed every store and building on Main Street and four fires in 1901 that also nearly destroyed the downtown area, Duncan has continued to grow and prosper. A celebration called Founders Day is still held every year during the last week in June to celebrate the towns birthday and the adventurous spirits of those who have made Duncan what it is today. Duncan is known as "The Buckle on the Oil Belt," with its claim to fame as the birthplace of Halliburton Corporation, which is responsible for a new method of cementing wells, making oil production much easier and more profitable. Attractions in Duncan include the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, the Stephens County Museum, the Prairie House Historic Site and the Main Street Duncan Historic Stepping Stone Trail in historic downtown Duncan. For outdoor recreation, Duncan has four area lakes that offer fishing, boating and other water sports, primitive camping and RV sites.
