Elk-City is located in Beckham County along historic Route 66 in east-central Oklahoma. The population as of the 2000 census was 10,510 residents. Downtown Elk City is filled with everything from chic boutiques to stores featuring rustic cowboy décor. Elk City is also home to the National Route 66 Museum, which is part of the Old Town Museum Complex. Inside the museum is a road motif that takes visitors to all eight states along the "Mother Road" from Illinois to California. Photographs, vintage autos, and recorded personal accounts vividly re-create the hey-day of this historic route. The Old Town Museum Complex is housed in a two-story Victorian house. The lower level is filled with memorabilia from every war in American history and the Native American Gallery, as well as the Miss America room with treasures from Elk City's own Susan Powell, Miss America 1981. Also included in the museum complex is the Transportation Museum and Farm and Ranch Museum. Visitors to the Transportation Museum take an interactive trip through the history of transportation and establishment of Route 66. You will step back in time as you sit in the front seat of a 1959 Cadillac and drive down Route 66. The Farm and Ranch Museum features a vast collection of tools that were used in early farm and ranch life in western Oklahoma. A blacksmith shop, windmill collection, tractors, broom corn thrasher, cotton strippers are among some of the antique exhibits on display in this museum.

Elk City Weather & Climate

Western Oklahoma has lots of wide open spaces, so wind is definitely a factor in the climate. Western Oklahoma is known for its mild winters and warm summers. Warm sunny days are so abundant in western Oklahoma that many retirees are finding it to be an ideal place to settle. Winters are chilly, but cold snaps usually only last for very short periods of time. Summers, on the other hand, can be sweltering. Springs are warm, though thunderstorms are frequent, while autumn is often the most enjoyable season, with blue skies and mild, sunny days. Oklahoma is near Tornado Alley and averages 54 tornadoes per year. Advances in technology now provide advance warning of these types of storms, however. Most tornadoes occur between late March through mid-June.
