Granite
is a small town located in Greer County in southwestern Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,844 residents. Situated at the foot of the Wichita Mountains, Granite is 17 miles north of Altus near Quartz Mountain Nature Park, which was formerly known as Quartz Mountain State Park. The Nature Park is operated by Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. In an effort to ensure the Baldy Point area was preserved, a popular climbing destination since the 1970s, it was purchased in 2001 by the Access Fund. It was then donated to the State of Oklahoma. In 2002 the area was designated Quartz Mountain Nature Park. The park is open year round and offers 6,260 lake acres and 4,284 park acres. There is a golf course at the park that is open year-round, hiking and nature trails and camping facilities. Other attractions near Granite include excursion train rides. The train runs between Clinton and Enid, Clinton and Frederick, Clinton and Elk City and Clinton and Altus on a private charter basis. The two hour narrated round trip takes approximately two hours for up to 130 persons and departs from Quartz Mountain. Quartz Mountain Flyer passenger parking and the boarding area is at the intersection of Routes 44 and 44A, approximately 17 miles North of Altus, Oklahoma.

Southwest Oklahoma has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. Dry, sunny weather generally prevails throughout the state. Precipitation varies but averages 50 inches in the southwest. Snowfall averages 9 inches a year in Oklahoma. Southwesst Oklahoma is tornado-prone. Tornadoes can occur at any time of year, but are easily most frequent during springtime. April, May and June represent the months of peak occurrence. May's average of 20 tornado observations per month is the greatest. The winter months each average less than one tornado per month. Most, but not all, of Oklahoma's tornadoes travel to the north and east.
