Muskogee is a city of approximately 40,000, located in east-central Oklahoma. It began as a railroad town, although the roots in the area go back much further to the Native Americans who built villages and burial mounds along the three rivers that come together just north of present day Muskogee. Some of the West's first trading posts were built in the area, also. The town of Muskogee was born when the Missouri-Kansas & Texas Railroad became the first rail line to cross Indian Territory in 1872. Named for the Creek Tribe, this dusty cow town rapidly grew into Indian Territory's most important city when the U.S. government established the Union Agency for the Five Civilized Tribes in 1875. The government then established a federal court here in 1889. The Dawes Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes was headquartered here to enroll the Indians and allot their land and Muskogee was selected to be the capital of the "Indian State." Known as the Three Forks region, the area has a wealth of attractions, including museums that showcase the city's proud heritage. The Five Civilized Tribes Museum is dedicated to preserving the art and culture of the five tribes. Honor Heights Park is a WWI memorial park that is famous for its azaleas and its annual Azalea Festival. In the wintertime, people from far and wide travel to see Honor Heights transformed into the Garden of Lights, a 132 acre Christmas lights display.

Muskogee Weather & Climate

Eastern Oklahoma has a temperate four-season climate with occasional extremes in temperature and rainfall. Eastern Oklahoma is situated near the heart of Tornado Alley. Lightening is common in the spring months, with the possibility of severe thunderstorms containing large hail, damaging winds or tornadoes. There is also the potential for flooding in eastern Oklahoma, however, a comprehensive flood management plan is in place for the area. Summers are usually accompanied by high humidity. Autumn is short, but often the most pleasant time of the year, consisting of sunny days and cool nights. Winter temperatures are generally mild, but occasionally experience extremes. Annual snowfall averages around nine inches.
