Pawnee is a historic town of approximately 2,500 located in northern Oklahoma. Attractions include the Pawnee Bill Buffalo Ranch and Museum, which features the 1910 home of Old West pioneer, Pawnee Bill. Major Gordon W. Lillie was given the name Pawnee Bill by the Pawnees when he came to Indian Territory as a young boy of seventeen. Pawnee Bill and Buffalo Bill rode together in what was to be the first of the Wild West Shows in 1883. The Only Show of its Kind Pawnee Bill's home stands furnished as in the days of its completion, with Oriental weavings and red and brown leather furniture, dark woods, a huge open fireplace with solid bronze andirons and mantel, drop chandeliers of diamond cut glass and much more. The mansion includes fourteen rooms in all. You can also drive through the buffalo pasture and view buffalo, longhorn, and elk as they might have looked to a pioneer traveling across the prairie. Walk through the log cabin, blacksmith shop, and the Indian flower shrine and take a walk back into time. Other attractions in Pawnee include the Pawnee County Historical Museum, the OSTA Steam and Gas Engine Show in May, and the Original Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show and Festival in June. Pawnee is a friendly little town that also offers fine restaurants and unique shops and other businesses.

Large and damaging tornadoes are a threat in almost any part of the state, but recent advances in technology and preparedness have reduced the loss of life. Most tornadoes occur between late March and mid-June. Winters are quite chilly, but cold snaps usually only last for very short periods of time. Summers, on the other hand, can be sweltering.
